The best area to stay in Bruges: the historic centre

If you love history and want to sleep in Bruges in a unique location amidst medieval alleyways, this is of course the area where you should stay in Bruges.

This area is a little away from the main tourist attractions, but the main sights are just a 10-15 minute walk away, and the train station won’t be too far either – about a 10 minute walk.

Once you’ve left your luggage in your room, you can go for a lovely walk along the waterfront. There aren’t many tourists and the area is quiet at night.

Bruges’ tourist district for accommodation: the market square

quartier-place-marche-bruges

Bruges’ central square – the Grote Markt in Dutch, or simply Markt, meaning market square – is surrounded by beautiful houses and covers an area of one hectare.

To the south of the Grote Markt is the city’s principal monument, the Bruges Belfry, dating from the 12th century.

This is undoubtedly the heart of the city: there are always lots of people there, whether for shows, concerts or simply when street musicians play on the square.

During the festive season, the Grote Markt is home to an ice rink and a Christmas market.

Nearby hotels often overlook the square or the picturesque rooftops of the city’s old buildings.

The atmosphere is particularly magical when the buildings are illuminated at nightfall, notably the belfry and the church of Notre-Dame.

The city’s main monuments and tourist sites are located all around the square within a 5-10 minute walk (except for the beguinage near the lake, which takes around 15 minutes to get to), and the finest museums are also just a short walk away (Memling, for example).

This is where you’ll find many of the cafés and restaurants that you absolutely must try when you’re in Bruges, not least to try the Belgian national dish, moules frites!

The popularity of this district can sometimes be a drawback, as the constant influx of tourists detracts from its charm.

The area to sleep as a couple in Bruges: the green canal

meilleur-quartier-bruges-dormir-canal

I’ve saved the best for last. If you want to enjoy the Bruges of postcards, head for the Groenerei (Green Canal). It’s one of the most bucolic corners of the city.

Around every corner you’ll come across old bridges and buildings covered in ivy and moss that look as if they’ve sprung straight from the canals.

Of course, this area of the city isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s definitely one of the most charming.

Hotels usually have a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the water, ideal for a romantic dinner.

But don’t forget that living by the canals is also a source of extra humidity, a factor you should take into account if you want to book in one of Bruges’ canal-side hotels.

To immerse yourself in this dreamy atmosphere and stay in a real fairytale, opt for a room overlooking the canal where you can see the swans on the calm waters in the early hours of the morning.

The setting isn’t always so idyllic, though, as you may also be woken by the loudspeakers of the boats whisking tourists around, so for added safety, don’t forget to pack your earplugs!

Sleep in the lakeside district

lac-quartier-dormir-bruges

If you like to relax and enjoy the gentle pace of life, don’t hesitate to look for accommodation towards Bruges’ lakeside.

It’s an idyllic place to take a walk, and some hotels overlook the peaceful waters of the “lovers’ lake”.

There are also a large number of hotels in the area, often tucked away in gardens and close to canals, where you can relax and unwind in the warmer months.

The main drawback of this area of the city is that mosquitoes are present in summer.

The western part of the city centre for accommodation in Bruges

saint-salvator-loger-bruges

In the western part of Bruges’ historic city centre, you’ll find another remarkable district that stretches around St Salvator’s Cathedral (Sint-Salvatorskathedraal in Dutch).

There is much less green space than next to the beguinage on the banks of the lake, but the houses are so close together that you will immediately feel the warm, cosy atmosphere full of authenticity and romance, in total harmony with the spirit of Bruges.

quartier-logement-bruges

The area is also renowned for its convenience, so you’ll be close to everything: it takes just 10 minutes to walk to the station and 5 to 7 minutes to get to Bruges’ central square.

What’s more, the ring road around the city is easily accessible from this area, and you can be on the road to Ghent in around 30 minutes.

There is plenty of parking, but it is not usually free. However, don’t hesitate to park there, as you won’t find as many in the city centre.

You won’t have to stray too far from your room for lunch, dinner or a drink, as there are plenty of cafés and restaurants in the area.

The best cheap area to stay in Bruges?

dormir-proche-gare-bruges

Bruges station district

The layout of Bruges is fairly simple: the old town is bounded by a series of canals. On the map, it looks like a large oval, to the south-west of which you’ll find the station.

Why stay in the station district?

1) If you’re just passing through Bruges for 1 or 2 nights, or if you’re just passing through and plan to go on to Ghent and Ostend; or 2) If you’re travelling by car and don’t want to waste time (and risk getting annoyed in traffic) looking for somewhere to park in the historic centre and don’t want to pay too much for your accommodation in Bruges.

However, the station is still fairly close to the city centre and will take you just 15 minutes to get there.

If your main concern when choosing your hotel is to keep your accommodation costs as low as possible, this is once again the area of the city that you should focus on.

Here you’ll find big chain hotels that won’t put too much of a dent in your holiday budget.

I hope you will find enough information here to select the best area to stay in Bruges according to your criteria.
