For culture in Brussels: Saint-Gilles

One of the bohemian districts of Brussels that is popular with young people (and not only!) is Saint-Gilles. It’s an area we recommend staying in Brussels if you love art and culture.

The area attracts musicians, artists and writers, and also has a lively events calendar full of fun festivals. The lack of tourist attractions in Saint-Gilles means you’ll probably be able to save money on accommodation if you decide to stay here.

If you’re travelling to Brussels on a budget, there’s still one affordable neighbourhood we suggest: Les Marolles. This residential district has a lot to offer travellers who want to live like locals.

This diverse neighbourhood is a mix of French and Flemish, but has welcomed many waves of immigrants, including from Spain, North Africa, Turkey and Syria.

As well as its diversity, the district is famous for its daily Vieux Marché, or flea market, on the Place du Jeu de Balle, selling clothes, antiques and much more.
