The best area to stay in Dubrovnik to visit

meilleur-quartier-centre-ville-dubrovnik-loger

Sleeping in Dubrovnik’s old town tempts many tourists looking to be close to monuments and restaurants.

Nevertheless, we don’t advise you to sleep in Dubrovnik’s old town if you like peace and quiet.

It’s a lively area, with bars and street entertainment until two in the morning.

Accommodation here is also more expensive than outside the city walls. This area is therefore expensive and noisy, but tourists love it because it is often more convenient to stay here when visiting Dubrovnik.

However, there are some areas of the old town where you can enjoy a little peace and quiet, so choose your flat or hotel carefully!

Here are five things to see and do in the Old Town:

  • In the Old Town, one of the most emblematic monuments is the Onofrio fountain.
  • You’ll enjoy a drink on the Stradun just as much as we do.
  • We highly recommend the Franciscan monastery.
  • We also recommend a visit to the church of San Blasio.
  • A visit to the Cathedral of the Assumption is also a must during your stay in Dubrovnik’s old town.

Where to sleep in Dubrovnik for peace and quiet? The Pile district

ou-loger-dubrovnik-quartier-pile

To the north-west of the Old Town is the Pile Gate, which gives access to the Pile district outside the city walls. Living in this district is practical, as it is well connected to the airport by bus.

What’s more, accommodation is cheaper. We particularly recommend this area for its peacefulness, which doesn’t mean it can’t have an active lifestyle: there are plenty of nice bars and restaurants where you can dine in the evening or enjoy a nice night out.

Here are five things to see and do in the Pile district:

  • In the afternoon you can take a stroll along the pretty Creeque de Danse.
  • We recommend a visit to Fort Lovrijenac.
  • Of course, you won’t want to miss the Pile Gate.
  • In this pretty district, you can stroll around and enjoy the view at your leisure.
  • A stroll along the water’s edge will also liven up your evenings in the Pile district.

Sleep just a stone’s throw from the centre and beaches of Dubrovnik: the Ploce district

ou-sejourner-quartier-dubrovnik

To the north-east of the old town, the Ploce gate leads to the Ploce district, which is just as interesting because staying here doesn’t take you too far from Dubrovnik’s old town.

This district runs alongside the sea, where you’ll find plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs. You can even go to the beach from this part of Dubrovnik.

It’s sunny and relatively quiet, although accommodation here is slightly more expensive as many hotels are close to the sea and even have their own private beaches.

Be careful, though, as this area is very hilly, so we recommend you choose an address close to the sea to avoid climbing too high.

Here are five things to see and do in Ploce:

  • The Ploce district is the ideal place to go to the beach.
  • We loved partying at the Revelin and Banje Beach clubs.
  • You can gaze out to sea at the island of Lokrum, and why not take a boat trip out there?
  • You’ll be sure to admire the fortifications of the historic town.
  • And, of course, the Ploce Gate at the end of the city walls.

A little further afield for a great holiday: the Lapad district

ou-dormir-a-dubrovnik-quartier-lapad

Located in the western suburbs of the city, Lapad is a pretty peninsula where you’ll find both parks and beaches. This district is home to some very good hotels.

Mediterranean vegetation is very present here, growing in the gardens and near the district’s churches.

Strolling through this district at sunset was one of our favourite activities during our stay: the gardens are beautiful, and the views over the old town and the sea are breathtaking.

This area of Dubrovnik may be a little far from the historic city, but there are shuttle buses that make it easy to get to.

Here are five things to see and do in Lapad:

  • In the Lapad district, we suggest you discover the hidden gardens.
  • This district is also ideal for going to the beach and basking in the sun all afternoon.
  • You can also visit its churches.
  • One evening you can go for a walk and admire the sunset over the city from Lapad hill.
  • If you’re staying in a luxury hotel, some offer a range of activities, such as scuba diving.

Here are our 3 favourite accommodations in this area, sorted by price category:

Note: Don’t delay as these are some of the most booked hotels in Dubrovnik.

The Gruz district: very popular with locals

This district is so popular with tourists looking for accommodation in Dubrovnik because of its low prices and easy access by public transport (the Dubrovnik bus station is located here, for example).

In this district we were able to go to the port of Gruz and visit the beautiful islands of Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan. It’s a long way from the centre, though, so you’ll have to take the bus to get to the cable car or the old town, for example.

We recommend this area for those on a budget and those who aren’t afraid of a bit of walking.

Here are five things to see and do in the Gruz district:

  • We recommend that you go to the port and take a boat to visit the islands: a romantic trip with a change of scenery guaranteed!
  • You can also go shopping in the large shopping centre or in the small boutiques in the district.
  • In this pretty district, you can do your shopping and go to the local market.
  • In the evening, we recommend you take advantage of the lively neighbourhood.
  • You can also go for a nice walk, and we recommend the route that leads to Porte Pile (about half an hour).

We hope this small selection will help you find the best areas of the city to stay in Dubrovnik.

Some are a little pricey, but have a prime position in the city and offer a wide range of activities.

Other, more affordable areas also promise some great discoveries and walks.

We strongly advise you to find out about the location of your accommodation: Is it high up? Far from transport? Far from beaches? Far from shops?

Choose the accommodation that suits you: for example, if you don’t like walking, you should avoid the Lapad district, which is a bit out of the way, or choose accommodation at the bottom of the Ploce district so you don’t have to climb long hills.

Ask about accommodation prices to find the best deals, but also a good quality of life, as this is very important when travelling.
