The best areas to stay in Marrakech
This guide we’ve put together will help you decide where to stay in Marrakech based on your interests and ideal conditions. Read on to find out more about the best place to stay in Marrakech.
Staying in Marrakech for the first time: the medina
If you’re visiting the city for the first time, there’s no better place to stay than the medina! A series of winding, narrow streets make the medina the heart and soul of historic Marrakech.
Around every corner you’ll find tasty restaurants, traditional riads and charming, rustic cafés.
The medina is also where you’ll find two of the city’s main attractions: Jemaa El-Fna square and the bustling souks.
Browse the stalls and pick up some bargains while enjoying this traditional Moroccan quarter.
So we’d recommend staying in the medina for your first stay in Marrakech, as you won’t need to use taxis or other means of transport to get to most of the things you might want to do.
One of the downsides of staying in the medina is that this area is car-free and quite busy.
What’s more, the streets are very much like a labyrinth, so it’s likely that you’ll get lost a few times – although this could also be an opportunity to discover some unexpected wonders!
5 things to see and do in the medina
– jemaa El-Fna square
– the Koutoubia mosque
– the Ben Youssef medersa
– the House of Photography
– the Marrakech Museum.

Sleeping in Marrakech for two: the kasbah
Being fairly close to the historic heart of Marrakech while still being in a slightly quieter area, we encourage you to head to the kasbah for your romantic stay in the Moroccan city.
One of the main choices of accommodation in the kasbah is the riad: these are pleasant town houses set back from the hustle and bustle of the streets and surrounded by a central garden. Riads are a typical type of accommodation in Marrakech, and a favourite with visitors to the city.
The area is home to the present-day Royal Palace and, as a result, a quieter, cleaner and more liveable side of the city.
The Kasbah district has its own souks and street food stalls to enjoy and sample the flavours of Marrakech.
There are also plenty of upmarket hotels to relax in, as well as trendy cafés and chic spas. The area’s location also makes it easy to get to many of the must-see sites on foot.
You’re not far from the medina, so it’s easy to walk to the souk or other famous attractions.
5 things to do and see in the Kasbah
– el Badiî Palace
– the Saadian tombs
– the Bab Agnaou gate
– the Royal Palace
– the 12th-century Moulay El-Yazid mosque.

To visit Marrakech: Mellah
If you love history, we recommend you stay in the Mellah district. This district exudes diversity, as you can visit several Jewish sites in the middle of a Muslim city.
Old synagogues and spice markets are just a few examples of what you can discover there.
Mellah was built in the middle of the 16th century during the Saadian period and quickly became a lively district within the flourishing city of Marrakech.
Mellah has wooden buildings, whereas the other districts have brick structures. It is a truly historic district and ideal for seeing how the Jewish and Islamic peoples lived side by side for centuries.
The district is located to the south-east of the medina and there is more housing here. It may also be more cost-effective for you to stay in the Mellah and walk to other popular areas of Marrakech.
5 things to do and see in Mellah
– the spice souk
– the Place des Ferblantiers
– the Bab Ghmat souk
– the Salat Al Azama synagogue

Where to stay in Marrakech with children: Palmeraie
A few kilometres to the north, the Palmeraie is an unexpected oasis along the Tensift River. Marrakech was in fact built in part thanks to this natural oasis of palm trees.
Today, this area borders the city. There are a number of large seaside resorts, all-inclusive resorts, a few golf courses and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy with your children!
The Palmeraie district is linked to the centre of Marrakech by bus (the nearest stops are Pont Tansift and Entree Palemerais).
Needless to say, this is the place to stay if you want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city and simply relax with the family in a desert oasis.

The area to go out in Marrakech: Guéliz
Guéliz is a modern Moroccan district. This colonial, or at least very French-speaking, part of Marrakech is home to chic cafés, new restaurants and small art galleries.
The district is also a prime destination that we strongly recommend to visitors looking for nightlife during their stay.
Although Moroccan law forbids the sale of alcohol within sight of the mosque, this area of Marrakech is home to a large number of bars and clubs where you can enjoy a discreet drink after sunset.
If you’re staying in Guéliz, don’t forget to visit the must-see Majorelle Garden, a superbly landscaped oasis of greenery where an incomparable variety of plants blend perfectly with a deep blue Art Deco villa.
5 things to see and do in Guéliz

For peace and quiet in Marrakech: Hivernage
If you’re looking for a more refined and luxurious place to stay in Marrakech, we suggest you stay in Hivernage.
Hivernage has the reputation of being Marrakech’s trendiest area in which to live and stay. It’s home to upmarket restaurants and bars that are ideal for a night on the town.
While the Medina, Kasbah and Mellah offer you the chance to discover Marrakech’s history and culture, Hivernage gives you a lesson in Moroccan life in the 21st century.
A little further away from the hustle and bustle of the medina, it’s best to have a car or expect to have to take taxis a lot if you want to stay in Hivernage.
This area of Marrakech is well served by transport, however, with the city’s railway station and numerous bus routes running through the district.
This means that it’s easy to get to Marrakech’s bustling traditional neighbourhoods further out in the centre, while still benefiting from a place to live away from the city’s more hectic areas.
