trident-quartier-logement-rome

Looking for a good area to stay in Rome? Although conveniently located within Rome’s historic city centre, the Trident district stands out for its elegance and luxury, making it one of the most exclusive areas in the Eternal City.

Home to a wide range of designer boutiques and Rome’s best 4- and 5-star hotels, it is also home to the majestic Piazza di Spagna and its monumental staircases, the Church of the Trinità degli Monti and the Villa Medici.

Nearby Via Veneto is another lavish area of Rome. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was a hot spot for Italian showbiz, frequented by celebrities from politicians to film stars, accompanied by their traditional paparazzi and hordes of fans.

It has largely lost its appeal since then, and you’ll come across more businessmen and cameramen here, although you’ll still enjoy discovering the elegant restaurants and palaces that dot the area.

The Jewish quarter to stay in Rome with your family: Ghettojuif

place-campo-de-fiori-quartier-dormir-rome

Although the Jewish quarter was originally created to bring the entire community together, in an atmosphere of religious and economic restrictions prompted by Pope Paul IV, today it is an admirable testimony to the history and influence of the oldest Jewish community in Europe.

Nestled in the heart of the city, not far from the historic centre, the old ghetto is a charming area in which to spend the night with your family in Rome, living life while remaining true to its ancient roots.

With its winding streets and old-world atmosphere, the Jewish Ghetto stretches from Piazza Venezia to the banks of the Tiber. Within it, you’ll find the great market of the Campo de’ Fiori (fairground), the Piazza Farnese, and relics of antiquity, such as the Teatro de Marcellus, nicknamed the “Jewish Colosseum”.

Be sure to visit the Great Synagogue and the Boccadella Verità, or Mouth of Truth. It is said that this stone mouth will bite the hand of anyone who does not dare to tell the truth.

The best area to go out in Rome? Trastevere

Trastevere-Rome-quartier-logement

On the other side of the Tiber is the Trastevere district, which takes its name from its location in relation to the city centre, “on the other bank”, Tevere being the Italian name for the river.

It’s one of the most popular and most visited rioni in Rome: it’s full of wonderful boutiques, restaurants and a myriad of places ideal for an evening aperitif. In fact, the district has one of the liveliest nightlife scenes in the city, and will delight night owls looking for the best places to go out in Rome.

Choose accommodation in the friendly Monti district

monti-quartier-hebergement-rome
Find accommodation in the charming Monti district

The oldest rione in the city, Monti was the “red light district” of ancient Rome. Today it’s quite the opposite: a charming little neighbourhood, albeit not far from the slightly squalid exit from Termini station.

Here you’ll find a number of small, traditional trattorias (restaurants) and upmarket ready-to-wear boutiques. Nearby, you’ll find the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (one of Rome’s most impressive religious buildings*), the National Museum of Rome, the Colle Oppio park and, on the same hill, the opulent Domus Aurea, or Golden House, the imperial palace built by Emperor Nero.

Accommodation to choose if: you’re passionate about the history of ancient Rome; you want to buy Italian clothes, shoes and handbags from independent retailers; you’re not keen on the hustle and bustle of the city and prefer the peace and quiet; you’re planning to walk along the Appian Way (or Via Appia); you’re looking for nightlife, but it’s rather peaceful; the friendly, almost village-like atmosphere appeals to you.

* If you want to visit some of the most impressive religious buildings in Europe, don’t hesitate to hire a local guide, as well as private transport – the ultimate comfort for any pilgrim or art lover!

The Celio district

Just south-west of Monti lies the residential district of Celio, at the heart of which stands the Colosseum. The surrounding area, with Constantine’s Arch, is crowded with tourists and onlookers during the day, but offers one of the most impressive views of the ancient amphitheatre at night. The small number of hotels in the Monti and Celio districts accentuates the exclusive atmosphere.

Although the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus and Palatine Hill dominate the area, don’t forget to visit the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, the ‘official’ cathedral of the city of Rome.

Don’t hesitate to hire a local guide to take you to the heart of ancient Rome!

Accommodation to choose if: you’re looking for a quieter, more peripheral experience of Rome; you’re already familiar with the historic sites in the city centre and want to visit the Colosseum and the Roman Forum; proximity to the Vatican is not one of your requirements; Roman ruins fascinate you.

One of the most beautiful areas to sleep in Rome: the Aventine

Looking for a nice, quiet area to stay in Rome? Discover the Aventine. Because of their proximity and similarities, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between the end of Celio and the beginning of the Aventine, and therefore to draw a strict line between these two districts.

The Aventine is a little further away from the ‘big’ sites (at least a 15-minute walk), which, along with its size, explains why there are so few hotels there, but the green spaces and other hidden gems make it one of the most beautiful areas of Rome.

Visit the Baths of Caracalla, the great Rose Garden and the famous Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta. In Piazza dei Cavalieri, be bold enough to head for the gateway at no. 4, the seat of the Priory of Malta, where there is always a curious queue. Join in, and when it’s your turn, stick your eye to the keyhole for a breathtaking view of the dome of St Peter’s Basilica silhouetted against the horizon.

The Aventine is also home to some of the most beautiful houses in Rome, so if you’re a fan of architecture and real estate, and you’re interested in the life of Rome’s elite, this is the place for you.

Aneighbourhood in Rome to choose if: you’re looking for an even quieter place to stay in Rome than the Celio district; you like to get off the beaten track; you want to escape the hordes of tourists; you’re not interested in the nightlife; Roman romance appeals to you, and you’re hoping for a beautiful wedding in the tiny church of Santa Maria in Tempulo, nearby; you’re dreaming of a jog along the tree-lined path of the Baths of Caracalla; you don’t mind being a little removed from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Rome’s modern district: Testaccio

Testaccio, on the outskirts of the city, is a more modern, more typically urban district, and undoubtedly the liveliest of Rome’s rioni. With its lively nightlife, it is also one of the least touristy areas of the city.

The district was built on a hill created by an accumulation of Roman waste, on the site of an old rubbish dump. Today, it is one of the best and most authentic glimpses of real, everyday life in Rome.

Despite its remoteness, this rione is also connected to the main tourist sites by metro or bus. With frequent bus services and a metro connection, Testaccio is directly linked to the Centro Storico, the Colosseum or the Trastevere district in just 5 to 15 minutes, depending on your destination and how busy it is. It’s the perfect holiday destination for visitors who want to see the sights, but also want to experience Rome’s authentic nightlife at its best.

Choose one if : you are looking for an authentic view of Rome, away from the tourists; you want to stay in a more modern area; you want to stay in Rome outside the city centre, but in a safe area; you want to save money and still have quality accommodation; you don’t mind public transport.

Rome’s elegant and chic districts: Flaminio and Parioli

Although neither Flaminio nor Parioli are located in the centre of the city, they are by far the most elegant areas to stay in Rome. Both mainly residential areas, they are home to magnificent villas, sumptuous museums and chic restaurants.

In Flaminio, you’ll find the famous MAXXI art gallery, designed by the architect ZahaHadid, and the Flaminio stadium for rugby.

Parioli, on the other hand, extends around the majestic (and impressive) gardens of Villa Borghese. Home to wealthy Romans and politicians, as well as the embassies of several foreign nations, this area is popular with the upper classes and is also one of the safest and most secure in the city. Here you can visit Villa Borghese, Villa Ada, Ponte Milvius and the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art (GNAM).

Choose this area if: you’re looking for a peaceful atmosphere; your idea of a Roman holiday includes long walks through vast gardens and along tree-lined avenues; you want to check out the luxurious palaces and other residential buildings in the area; you’re travelling with children, for whom the many parks and slower pace of this part of the city are ideal; you plan to frequent trendy bars and restaurants.

Rome’s tourist districts: the Vatican and Prati

quartier-dormir-logement-rome-prati-vatican
Stay in Rome’s beautiful Prati district

Although the Vatican is theoretically a city-state completely independent of Rome, it is located just across the Tiber from the city centre. It’s worth staying there if you want to divide your time between the two cities.

The Borgo (I Borghi) district, which surrounds St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, may seem excessively touristy, but Prati, to the east, is a completely different story.

Built relatively late in the city’s history, the wide boulevards and other straight roads are more organised and structured than the chaotic little streets of Rome. Prati has perhaps fewer souvenir shops and more restaurants, and its hotels are relatively affordable.

As well as St Peter’s Basilica, visitors to this part of Rome can visit the Vatican Museums and Gardens, the Sistine Chapel, Castel Sant’Angelo, the Cortile del Belvedere and hundreds of beautiful historic chapels, churches and basilicas.

Choose this tour if: your main interest is exploring the Vatican; the well gridded streets of Prati satisfy your love of order; you don’t mind crowds; you want to concentrate on the Vatican and the centre of Rome, rather than the Via Appia or the contemporary art museums on the other side of the city; you want to explore Rome’s Catholic heritage; you want to arrive early for an audience with the Pope; you’re looking for an affordable hotel.
