The best district to stay in for the first time in Hamburg?
HafenCity
The first time we went to Hamburg, we stayed in an up-and-coming district called HafenCity . It’s only just beginning to emerge, yet it already rivals some of Germany’s most famous areas. Here are the highlights:
- We highly recommend taking an afternoon to visit The Spice Museum. Here you’ll see a rich display of spices that you can also taste, and you’ll be told in detail about their production, preservation and benefits.
- Visit the Hamburg Dungeon and relive 600 dark years of Hamburg in this underground prison. For 90 minutes, you’ll be treated to theatrical performances and guided walks by experts who will tell you all about the horror that reigned in these torture chambers for centuries.
- And don’t forget to visit the Elbphilharmonie, an enchanting concert hall with hundreds of seats, built over a red-brick warehouse. Not to be missed!
- Take a Scuddy electric scooter ride through the district and see HafenCity through children’s eyes for an hour.
- Grab a bite to eat at the Neni restaurant and enjoy a tasty , friendly lunch.

Neighbourhoods to avoid in Hamburg
Reebahn
This street may be the ideal place for party-goers, with its trendy bars, discos and restaurants, but it is also the least recommended part of Hamburg’s St Pauli district. It owes its reputation as a bad neighbourhood to the prostitutes who literally throw themselves at you to offer their “services”, the drug dealers and the pickpockets who have their own way of welcoming you! So don’t venture out on your own.
Best district(s) for going out in Hamburg
St Pauli
St Pauli is Hamburg’s nightlife district par excellence. The least we can say about this district is that it does everything it can to ensure you have a pleasant evening. What you need to know is that St Pauli is forbidden to under-18s, so get out your ID card and embark on a magical and unforgettable night.
- The Davidwache police station in the heart of Hamburg’s red-light district; the Reeperbahn whose interventions have helped make this area a safe and frequented place.
- Spend some time at the “Zur Ritze” nightclub and dance the night away to the rhythm of good rock’n’roll music and have a drink in good company.
- Visit Große Freiheit and Herbertstraße for a taste of Hamburg’s party scene.
- We’d also like to introduce you to the Beatles’ former “headquarters” and the place where they loved to go out and party.
- Find out about the most unadvisable places in this district to avoid unpleasant surprises.
