The best district to stay in Lille: Vieux-Lille

visite-vieux-lille-quartier-dormir

The Vieux-Lille district has retained the charm of its past. The winding streets, dating back to the Middle Ages, and its typical red-brick architecture are sure to charm you! Old Lille is often the first thing travellers come to see.

In a totally authentic setting, you can find the soul of the city, with all its exposed beams, period signs, colourful facades and much more.

The tourist district to stay in: Lille-Centre

dormir-centre-ville-lille-logement

You can leave behind the rather medieval atmosphere of Vieux-Lille to explore a district marked by more recent eras.

It is around the Grand’Place that the heart of the city beats. Lille-Centre is the most densely populated district in Lille, with almost 30,000 inhabitants. It is surrounded by the Wazemmes and Euralille districts.

monument-voir-lille-visite2

A large majority of the population is aged between 15 and 50, making it a very young and dynamic district. It is home to a large number of students and young professionals, making it a very lively district with many shops, cinemas, restaurants and bars.

The area is also full of cultural treasures, such as the Palais des Beaux-Arts, a museum with collections of many different styles, and the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville and its famous Belfry, which stands 104 metres high and offers an incredible view of the whole region!

So, if you’re planning to visit the city mainly on foot, this is certainly the best place we can suggest for you to stay in Lille.

As far as the budget is concerned, if you plan to stay in Lille in the area around the main square, the budget will be a little higher than for accommodation in other parts of Lille. However, prices are still quite reasonable, and it is possible to stay in Lille near the Grand Place without breaking the budget for your stay!

Where to sleep in Lille for less? The Bois-Blancs district

sejourner-quartier-lille-hotel

The Bois Blanc district is
close to the city centre, and has a vibrant atmosphere
that attracts many people. It has a less
important cultural offer than Lille-Centre, for example, but budget-wise it’s still
cheaper, while still being close to things to do and see!

It’s a district in which we recommend you stay in Lille, as it has lots of green spaces, which will certainly make you succumb to the charm of this very modern district, especially if you’re staying in Lille with children!

Things to see and do in
Bois-Blancs :

– See a show
at the Grand Bleu

– Take a walk in the Parc Colline

– The Assocation Transport Culturel
Fluvial, an art workshop

– Saint-Charles church

– La Plaine des Vachers, a city park.

The Euralille district for accommodation in Lille close to the station

ou-loger-lille-euralille-quartier

Euralille is France’s third-largest business district, after La Défense in Paris and La Part-Dieu in Lyon. It has been the hub of economic activity in Lille since the 1980s, with a large number of service sector companies, a major shopping centre and entertainment venues.

New projects are regularly launched here, and expansion work is commonplace, making it an attractive area in which to live in Lille. Its appeal also lies in its proximity to shops, restaurants and bars. It’s also close to Lille’s two train stations (Lille-Flandres and Lille-Europe), making it an ideal location for travelling around France and Europe.

For its mobility and proximity
to shops, Euralille is an area we highly recommend
!

Things to see and do at
Euralille :

– Shopping at the Westfield shopping centre
Euralille

– Window-shopping at the Printemps store in Lille

– The Porte de Paris, the famous
17th-century archway

– Take a walk in the Henri Park
Matisse

– Attend a concert at the Zenith Arena.

The station district: Lille Flandres and Lille Europe

quartier-lille-loger-gare

When you’re wondering where to
stay in Lille, the 2 train stations are one of the options. In
fact, they are located close to the city centre (5 to 10 minutes on foot
depending on the station) and there are plenty of places to stay to
visit the city.

Clearly, the location
of the 2 stations is a good one, especially if you’re planning to explore the city’s
surroundings. In fact, it’s the departure point for trains to
the Louvre Lens, for example, but it’s also the main metro station
(Lille Flandres) so you can go to Roubaix, for example, for the La
Piscine museum, or to Villeneuve d’Ascq for the LAM.

Staying in Lille near the
train station is therefore very practical. However, these are not necessarily the most
charming places in Lille. Even so, because of their proximity to the city centre, you can easily reach
the city’s most beautiful spots on foot. For mobility,
staying in the station area is a time-saving tip that we
invite you to adopt!

Things to do and see in the
station district:

– Stroll around the Jardin des Géants

– Relax at Place Vauban

– The Porte de Gand

– The church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine

– Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille cathedral.

Sleep in Lille’s République district

quartier-dormir-lille-republique

The République district revolves around the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille’s
main museum. There are slightly fewer
holiday accommodation options in this district, but there are nevertheless some
accommodation options for those who want to stay there!

République is about 10 minutes’ walk from the Grand Place and Lille Flandres station. The district is more centrally located, with quick access to Gambetta and Wazemmes. However, the district is less dynamic than Vieux-Lille or the Grand Place.

There are fewer restaurants and bars, for example. Nevertheless, and we’d like to reiterate this, in a city the size of Lille, this is only half the drawback, as you can easily get to the centre on foot!

What’s more, République is a district that we highly recommend to budget travellers who want to get away from the historic centre without being too far from it.

Things to see and do at
République:

– Palais des Beaux-Arts

– Saint-Etienne church

– Place de la République

– Saint-Maurice church

– Stroll around the Square Foch.

Gambetta – Wazemmes: cheap accommodation in Lille

marche-lille-quartier-dormir

Gambetta and Wazemmes are two pleasant districts of Lille. They are home to the city’s main market (the Wazemmes market), which takes place on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.

These are good areas to stay in Lille, popular, with a friendly atmosphere and not too expensive. a 15-minute walk will take you into the city centre, and Gambetta and Wazemmes are served by the metro.

These two districts are located
right next to the dynamic and lively Euralille district, with the advantage of being
less expensive. If you’re on a budget, we advise you to live in
one of these two districts.

Things to see and do in Gambetta
and Wazemmes :

– The Maison de l’Habitat durable

– The church
Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul

– The arts association Flonflons
Wazemmes l’Accordéon

– The Flandre Manuel garden

– The Comédie de Lille club.
