Admire the Victorian architecture in the city
If shopping isn’t free, window shopping is. If you venture into the center of the city, I invite you to go and admire the amazing architecture of the Queen Victoria building, built in 1898, which now houses some of the most beautiful stores in Australia.
Get lost in the Royal Botanical Gardens
One of the best things to do in Sydney, in my opinion, is to walk through this walk through this beautiful garden, escape the hustle and bustle and smell the flowers, literally!
The Royal Botanical Gardens is located near the Sydney Harbour Opera House and offers some of the best views of the city and Sydney Harbour
If you’re really into plants or want to learn more about the gardens, I suggest checking out the Royal Botanical Garden Visitor Center
Strolling on the Sydney Harbour Bridge
Walking on the Sydney Harbour Bridge has become a favorite activity to do, among locals and tourists alike!
There is a walking path on each side of the bridge that I urge you to take so you can enjoy different views of Sydney Harbour.
There are two other options here (for a fee, though): if you want to get more height, the Pylon Lookout invites you to admire the view at 87 above sea level
If you are not afraid of thrills, the monument can also be climbed (for a small fee). At least, the advantage of walking across it is that it doesn’t cost a cent!
Stroll through Paddy’s Market
Sydney is famous for its weekend markets, and even if you’re not in the mood to buy anything, it’s still worth stopping by
To soak up the atmosphere, I suggest you visit Paddy’s Market: it’s one of the most popular markets in Sydney, where you can find unique souvenirs, great clothes or food to treat your taste buds. It’s simple: there’s really everything you need!
Admire the street art of the Inner West
Inner West is a creative mecca and you can tell by the amazing street art that adorns many of its walls!
To discover its hidden art treasures, I encourage you to walk at your own pace in this trendy Sydney suburb, especially in St Peters, Enmore and Newtown.
Take a walk in the Barangaroo Reserve
Located at the foot of the foreshore of Sydney Harbour, Barangaroo is one of the best places in the city that I recommend you go to feel the sea breeze and enjoy an incredible view of the city!
Stroll along the Bondi to Clovelly Coastal Drive
This boardwalk is one of Sydney’s most popular destinations
Starting from the world-famous Bondi Beach, the walk I invite you to take here takes you on a journey along the coast!
You’ll pass by Tamarama and Bronte Beach, where you can sit and watch the surfers below. If you’re really motivated, you can continue on to Clovelly.
Yoga in the city
The Lululemon store, located in George Sreet, offers free yoga classes every week
In my opinion, it’s a great way to start the day before heading out on a hike around Sydney and enjoying all the other free activities the city has to offer!
Visit the Art Gallery of New South Wales for free
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is completely free. The fact that you can enjoy some of the most amazing art exhibits in the country without spending a dime is awesome!
Even if you’re not an art lover, I still suggest you check it out inside, because you won’t be surprised!
Contemporary art lovers applaud this museum, not only for its vast collection of over 7,000 works of art, but also for the beautiful Art Deco building that houses the collection
The building dates back to 1952, but the museum itself opened in 1991. The temporary exhibitions are spread over four levels: sculpture, post-modern art and contemporary Aboriginal art
The permanent collection includes works by Warhol, Hockney and Christo. It is located in a prime location, next to Circular Quay, on the harbor.
Admire the architecture of St Mary’s Cathedral
St Mary’s Cathedral on College Street, at the end of Hyde park, is the longest church in Australia
The idea for the church was first developed when Captain Arthur Phillip moved to Australia in 1788, but construction did not begin until 1821.
The original St Mary’s Cathedral was actually destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1868, construction began on the new church, but it became an ongoing project that was not completed until 2000
Today, with its spectacular Gothic design and prominent location, it’s a wonderful place to visit, whether you’re a believer or not!
Walking in Hyde Park
Hyde Park is a beautiful green lung of over 40 acres, located in the heart of Sydney
It is also the oldest public park in the city! And for good reason: it’s surrounded by some of the best things to do in Sydney, like St Mary’s Cathedral (which I featured above) and Archibald’s Fountain in the center of the park.
On a sunny day, you can find many Sydneysiders relaxing on their lunch break, feeding the birds and chilling out. So why not do what they do?
Take advantage of free festivals
Throughout the year, Sydney hosts a number of incredible festivals, many of which offer free admission!
If you’re interested in this type of event, then here are a few names that might interest you: the Sydney Festival, Mardi Gras, Vivid Light Festival, Sculptures by the Sea and Good Food Month
And don’t forget the amazing New Year’s Eve fireworks on the harbor!
