Christianshavn: the district to stay in Copenhagen for the 1st time
Trendy bars, hipster cafés and a very relaxed atmosphere.
With its narrow streets lined with charming old &coloured houses, Christianshavn is a very pleasant area that will be the perfect base camp for your holiday in Copenhagen. It is also home to the famous self-governing community of Christiana.
The unique self-governing community of Freetown Christiania is a must-see when visiting Denmark’s capital. Its 34 hectares are home to 850 permanent residents, all governed by the Christiania Act of 1989.
Significantly different from Danish legislation in some respects, the most famous of course being the legality of cannabis and other drugs.
The environmental policy is very strict, the houses are all handcrafted from recycled materials, the streets are all car-free, and the alternative music venues, cafés and art galleries make it an absolutely unique place to take a stroll.
If the sun is shining, hire a boat from Christianshavn Bådudlejning & Cafe and you can spend a lazy afternoon exploring the canals.
If you’re interested in the region’s naval past, take a look at the Royal Danish Naval Museum, which houses a unique collection of model ships dating back to 1670.

This is also where you’ll find the famous Little Mermaid statue. Don’t be too disappointed when you see it, as the statue is much smaller than you might imagine.
It is, however, well worth the diversions, if only to add it to the list of must-see sights on your visit, but don’t forget to read this great Christian Andersen classic before you go, as it is quite different from the Disney version that everyone knows.
Just behind the Little Mermaid you’ll find the impressive Kastellet, a very well-preserved citadel.

Fascinating modern architecture in harmony with nature, right on the water.
Ørestad is a relatively new part of the city, built on the island of Amager.
Its excellent public transport links to the city (a seven-minute train ride to Copenhagen Central Station) and to the airport make it a great place to stay for a weekend getaway.
The design of the homes was chosen in an international architectural competition in 1994, giving this part of the city its inimitable style.
Copenhagen’s international concert hall, the DR Koncerthuset (Copenhagen Symphony Hall), is a real architectural feat, with images projected onto a transparent screen at the front, giving the impression that the building is constantly in motion.
Grab your towel and head to Islands Brygge harbour for an open-air swim in the heart of the city.
You can choose to take a dip in one of the 5 pools, or even take the plunge from 3 diving boards. In winter, saunas are available to warm you up between dips in the icy water.
