It’s a district that I really fell in love with, because it is perhaps the perfect embodiment of the authenticity of this city of centuries-old buildings.
I highly recommend staying in and visiting this part of Montreal on the banks of the St. Lawrence River.
As you stroll along its cobbled streets, you’re sure to admire the architecture of its monuments, epitomised by City Hall and the Notre Dame de Montréal Basilica, one of this district’s biggest attractions with its old-world charm.
But there are other buildings I recommend you see, notably the Bonsecours Market, Château Ramezay and Notre Dame du Bonsecours.
The district is packed with history museums and authentic French restaurants, and is linked to the rest of the city by three metro stations.

This is a lively, dynamic neighbourhood where you’ll meet professionals, university students and shopping enthusiasts, but it’s far from being just a business district.
It’s an area that’s not short on personality, with metal and glass skyscrapers towering above it, large shops, stalls and restaurants.
The city centre is also home to the Quartier des spectacles, where the events that have earned Montreal its reputation as a cultural capital take place. This is where you can enjoy open-air jazz performances, among other things.

You’ll love the non-stop spectacle of workers and locals milling about, looking very elegant during the week, and in casual mode in the evenings and at weekends. This is where you can stop off for an aperitif and sunbathe on the terrace as soon as the weather permits.
If you’re looking for an area in which to shop in Montreal, Rue Sainte-Catherine is the place to be, with its upmarket retail outlets.
You’ll also find several shopping centres, all connected to a vast indoor pedestrian network, a labyrinth that makes it easy to get around the city centre and do your shopping whatever the weather.
And you won’t get lost, thanks to the RÉSO maps you’ll find everywhere, which will act as Ariadne’s breadcrumbs.
I’d also suggest strolling around the sumptuous McGill University campus, with its many century-old buildings, or taking in an exhibition at one of the city’s main museums, such as the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Arts or the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
How to get to downtown Montreal :
Simply take the Montreal metro and stop at any station between Guy-Concordia and Saint-Laurent on the Green Line, or any station between Lucien L’Allier and Champ-de-Mars on the Orange Line.

It’s a good little place, renowned for its bohemian atmosphere, where I recommend you stay in Montreal, especially if you’re a couple.
It’s an area that French expatriates in Canada really love, very lively in both summer and winter.
Located right next to the bustling downtown area, Plateau Mont-Royal, simply known as the Plateau, is a borough of Montreal located east of Mont-Royal.
This neighbourhood, once home to the working class, is now home to typical, brightly coloured houses, picturesque cafés, trendy bars and bookshops
Some of Boulevard Saint-Laurent’s best-loved attractions include La Centrale galerie Powerhouse, Casa del Popolo and Schwartz’s legendary charcuterie.

Saint-Henri: the family district where to stay in Montreal
At the south-western end of Montreal, near Little Burgundy, lies Saint-Henri, a picturesque and peaceful family neighbourhood in which to stay in Montreal. It has become gentrified in recent years, but still has a distinct residential ambience.
But that doesn’t mean you should ignore it. On the contrary, I’d encourage you to stay in this beautiful part of Montreal, if you’re looking for a more relaxed and subtle stay. For it is in this district that gastronomy, art, history and wide-open green spaces meet and blend harmoniously.

Once considered one of the city’s blue-collar districts, and still marked by the image of workers wearing blue overalls, Saint-Henri is now packed with the city’s trendiest restaurants, bars and cafés.
Picturesque squares and sumptuously colourful residential streets fill the neighbourhood, as do the many Art Deco buildings, such as the Atwater Market, whose Art Deco style has made it one of the most magnificent buildings in Montreal.
Opened in 1933, the Atwater market is renowned for its countless butchers and cheesemongers, its horticultural produce in the spring, and its market gardeners, who set up shop around the perimeter of the building when summer arrives.
Shopkeepers also offer a wide variety of fine and original fresh produce.
The Lachine Canal is one of Saint-Henri’s biggest attractions. You can explore it on foot, or by bike as far as Old Montreal, or as far west as Lasalle, a 10 km walk on a dedicated path.

Griffintown: the trendy place to stay in Montreal
Griffintown, next to the Lachine Canal, is a busy pedestrian district with a dedicated cycle path for cycling fans. It is also renowned for its condos and restored warehouses.
It’s a neighbourhood I highly recommend, because it’s very lively. In fact, the neighbourhood has a very active arts scene.
The Arsenal Art contemporain art centre in the heart of Griffintown often organises events like Cultural Tuesdays to promote contemporary art among young people, while the Centre d’art de Montréal focuses mainly on the work of local artists.
One of the district’s most important attractions is the Basilica of Notre-Dame, a sumptuous neo-Gothic church dating from the 1800s and famous for its dazzling stained glass windows.
Griffintown, North America’s oldest blue-collar neighbourhood, is also home to restaurants by famous chefs, cosy cafés, exclusive boutiques and bars with an industrial ambience.

And that’s all there is to it, but don’t be fooled into thinking that Montreal is just a few neighbourhoods where you can sleep.
