The best area to stay in New Orleans: Marigny

ou-dormir-nouvelle-orleans-quartier-marigny

Looking for the best neighbourhood to sleep in New Orleans for a first stay?

Faubourg Marigny owes its name to Bernard Marigny, who once owned a plantation on the land where the neighbourhood now stands. It is adjacent to the French Quarter – Avenue de l’Esplanade is the dividing line – and is full of eye-catching Creole cottages, corner shops, neighbourhood bars and live music.

Marigny is the starting point for live music, thanks to the large number of clubs in this little corner of New Orleans. Frenchmen Street, a block from the eastern edge of the French Quarter, is where you’ll hear live tunes coming out of almost every door for four blocks.

Where to stay in New Orleans to visit : Lower Garden District

Long ago, the LGD was home to a large population of working-class immigrants due to its proximity to the city’s economic centre and industrial opportunities along the nearby river.

Today, however, the area is full of trendy cafés, bars, restaurants, antique and vintage shops, and galleries, among other attractions.

Although Magazine Street offers several miles of wonderful shops, the stretch in the LGD district is by far the funkiest.

Where to stay in New Orleans with your family: Warehouse District

ou-dormir-nouvelle-orleans-quartier-warehouse

Once an industrial area popular with families, this district serves as a bridge between the Central Business District and the more residential Uptown area.

And it is perhaps thanks to this key location that the Warehouse District is now one of the city’s most culturally rich and restaurant-rich neighbourhoods. With the Convention Center along the river, the internationally acclaimed World War II Museum and its own Arts District, the area is always buzzing.

Where to stay in New Orleans as a couple: Bayou St. John

Bayou St. John and the Fairgrounds are among the city’s most romantic and historic neighbourhoods, thanks in part to their importance along the early trade routes linking the Mississippi and Lake Pontchartrain to the north.

Today, these neighbourhoods are home to quirky restaurants, cosy cafés and eccentric boutiques. The area is also perfectly located for couples attending major events such as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Voodoo Fest in the autumn.

The best area for going out: Treme

ou-dormir-nouvelle-orleans-quartier-treme

Known as the oldest black neighbourhood in America, Treme has a history that is both joyous and tragic. This is the birthplace of many New Orleans traditions, including second lines and Mardi Gras Indians.

And while residents whose families have lived here for generations are currently struggling with rising housing prices, there’s no better way to get to know New Orleans’ black community than to discover the neighbourhood’s abundance of jazz clubs, soul food venues and cultural centres.

Where to stay cheap in New Orleans: Uptown

Nestled between the Garden District and the point where the Mississippi bends, Uptown covers a lot of ground. The area includes smaller neighbourhoods such as Irish Channel, Riverside, Garden District and Freret, all of which can be reached via the St. Charles Avenue tram line.

Even a self-guided tour of Uptown’s beautiful homes could give you plenty to do in a day, but we have plenty of other suggestions to keep you busy.

A stroll down Freret Street is usually a fun (and delicious) time. Pop into Windowsill Pies, Crescent City Comics and, if you fancy it, get to know some puppies or cats at Zeus’ Rescues.

The Uptown section of Magazine Street offers high-end boutiques, galleries and antique shops. Favourites include Lady Delaney’s unique Imaginarium, where you can discover whimsical miniatures and other curiosities for sale, Magpie for vintage clothing and jewellery, Dark Garden Corsetry and Couture, and locally designed jewellery at Mignon Faget.

You can also make your own jewellery, if you fancy, at The Bead Shop. And if you’re looking to relax, head to the Prytania Theater, which offers arthouse films and afternoon classics.
