Where to stay in Tenerife for the first time: Costa Adeje

Looking for the best place to stay in Tenerife on your first visit? While its beaches are definitely worth a visit, its friendly atmosphere is no less appealing.

Located on the south-west coast of the island, Costa Adeje is certainly my top choice for first-time visitors to the island of Tenerife, with its colourful atmosphere and abundance of things to do. Costa Adeje will welcome you with stunning views of Mount Teide and beautiful beaches where you can relax.

In Costa Adeje you’ll find some of the best traditional restaurants, cafes, beach bars and shops on the island. One day you can enjoy beaches with turquoise waters and the Blue Flag (a certification of cleanliness), the next you can go hiking with magnificent views over the landscape. What’s more, if you feel like partying, you can dance the night away at parties held on the beach and in the famous resorts of San Juan and Playa Paraiso, located just to the north of the city.

What to do and see in Costa Adeje?

Fancy an afternoon at the water park? Whether at Siam Park or Aqualand, your children will love playing in the water and seeing the sublime dolphins on show!

Puerto de la Cruz is by far the best place to stay in Tenerife with your family! Puerto de la Cruz is the largest town in the Spanish Canary Islands. It is located on the north coast of Tenerife and is famous for its black volcanic sand beaches and the huge Loro Parque zoo.

You’ll find plenty of charming, laid-back beaches here, ideal for relaxing. In this region, luxury lovers must visit Lago Martiánez and enjoy a cocktail by the luxurious palm-fringed pools for the ultimate experience.

The beauty of Puerto de la Cruz is that here you’ll not only find luxury resorts next to incredible beaches, but you’ll also have access to the green part of the island. With a little more rain than other parts of the island, this area offers beautiful botanical gardens with many different types of plants and flowers. Tenerife’s famous volcanic black sand beaches can also be found here. These volcanic sand beaches look great in photographs, so don’t forget your camera!

This seaside resort has not finished wowing you with its many attractions :

For partying, there are two major events on offer; the sardine festival and the annual carnival.
As for the old town, it’s a great place to visit on foot and make the most of its streets.

Where to stay in Tenerife as a couple: Los Gigantes

Los Gigantes is a great place to stay in Tenerife as a couple.

Los Gigantes is an old fishing village on the island’s south coast, a 25-minute drive from Costa Adeje in the north. Although the village is becoming more popular with travellers every day, Los Gigantes is still not as touristy as other parts of the island and that’s why I recommend Los Gigantes as a place to stay in Tenerife for anyone looking for a local experience. To reach Los Gigantes, the southern airport, Reina Sofia Airport is more convenient.

The famous beach in this area is Playa de la Arena. It is a quiet sandy beach surrounded by picturesque palm trees. Although there are only two beaches in Los Gigantes, you’ll find friendly local cafés and restaurants with a Spanish atmosphere. You can simply stroll down to the harbour and enjoy the beautiful views and discover the pretty spots along the coast. In Los Gigantes, you’ll also see some stunning cliffs overlooking the shore at Puerto Santiago and you should definitely go hiking on these to enjoy the scenery!

Visit the El Medano Shopping Centre and wander through its 4 floors to find some great shops to explore!
And don’t forget to visit the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Mercedes church for an emotionally-charged spiritual experience!
