The best area to stay in Toulouse: the city centre

quartier-centre-ville-dormir-toulouse

If you want to stay right in the heart of the Toulouse metropolis, then I really advise you to put your suitcases down in this district. The city centre is bounded by the boulevards d’Arcole and Strasbourg, as well as the Place d’Esquirol and Rue de Metz.

If you stay in this district, you’ll also be able to admire Toulouse’s two most famous bridges: Saint-Pierre and Pont neuf. The other good thing is that all your activities can be done on foot.

In fact, by living in this district, you’ll be just a few minutes’ walk from the city’s major sites of interest, including the Place du Capitole and the Basilique Saint Sernin.

And don’t forget that it’s also a great place to party, with its many trendy restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Toulouse’s tourist district: Saint Cyprien

meilleur-quartier-loger-toulouse

This is certainly one of the most popular but also one of the most dynamic districts to sleep in Toulouse. Saint Cyprien is also a lively place where you can do several activities during your stay.

You can take a stroll along the Pont Saint-Michel or the Pont des Catalans, via the Allées Charles de Fitte. You’ll also find historic monuments and sites such as the Abattoirs and the Prairie des Filtres.

And if you’re lucky enough to visit in June, you won’t want to miss the Rio Loco festival in Saint Cyprien.

Last but not least, Saint Cyprien is the most affordable neighbourhood in Toulouse. As it happens, you won’t find many hotels in the area, so it may be a good idea to opt for a flat rental.

Areas to stay with the family: Les Carmes and Saint-Etienne

sejourner-quartier-carme-toulouse

I really recommend Les Carmes and Saint-Etienne to people looking for accommodation in Toulouse and who love living in quiet areas away from the urban rush.

In fact, when you stay there, you’ll feel like you’re living in a village. The place stands out for its authenticity and friendly atmosphere. What’s more, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to come across a few ‘bobos’ and ‘hipsters’.

I also recommend this district for its many organic markets, authentic restaurants and coffee bars. What’s more, you’ll be just a stone’s throw from the quays of the Garonne. So, for a family holiday, I really recommend staying in Toulouse in the Carmes and Saint-Etienne districts.

Where to stay in Toulouse? The Jeanne d’Arc district

logement-toulouse-quartier-jeanne-darc

I’d also really recommend putting Jeanne d’Arc on your list of the best areas in Toulouse. This district, located between the city centre and Toulouse station, is the ideal spot if you’re not planning to stay too long in Toulouse. For example, you’ll be able to get to cities like Albi (which I’ll tell you about at the end of this article) quickly.

Jeanne d’Arc is also the perfect place for those with a passion for the history of the pink city. You’ll find a number of buildings with historic architecture here.

What’s more, this charming district is close to many of Toulouse’s entertainment venues. It’s also close to Jean Jaurès, so there are plenty of bars and clubs where you can go out at night in Toulouse.

Staying in this part of Toulouse also gives you quick access to museums and other major monuments in the city centre.

Jeanne d’Arc is also an attractive district because of its famous open-air crystal market, where you can find some of the cheapest produce in France.

Finally, don’t forget to sample the local gastronomy by taking a stroll down Rue Bayard. You’ll find restaurants serving succulent oysters.

Saint-Michel

ou-dormir-toulouse-quartier-saint-michel

This is the area where you will meet the majority of students in Toulouse. Which also makes it one of the liveliest districts in the “pink city”.

It’s worth noting that hotels are very accessible to the east of the district, more precisely near the Ile du Ramier. You’ll also find a number of rental flats on the main rue Saint-Michel.

Finally, places like the Jardin des Plantes and the Jardin Royal are perfect for relaxing. You could also take a romantic stroll along the magnificent Allées Jules Guesdes.

Compans Caffarelli: Toulouse’s shopping district

toulouse Caffarelli-quartier-loger

Let’s discover one of the most chic areas to stay in Toulouse, but also one of the most modern: Compans Caffarelli.

This pretty district is just north of Toulouse city centre. Compans Caffarelli is also just a stone’s throw from several of Toulouse’s universities and grandes écoles.

If you want to go shopping in the pink city, I really recommend living in this district. As the hub of the Toulouse metropolis, Compans Caffarelli is home to a number of underground shopping centres.

Finally, note that this district, built between the boulevard de la Marquette and the boulevard de Lascrosses, gives you the opportunity to enjoy the sumptuous Japanese garden as well as the famous Canal du Midi.

Albi: if you’re looking for accommodation close to Toulouse

dormir-proche-toulouse-albi

I’d like to round off this roundup of the best places to stay in Toulouse with a look at Albi. This is another region close to the “pink city”. Albi is also known as an Episcopal city. The many attractive properties on offer here are located on the north bank of the Tarn, close to the cathedral.

The advantage of staying in this town near Toulouse is that you’ll have easy access to Toulouse’s monuments and sites of interest.

I really recommend that you also take advantage of the opportunity to discover the surrounding regions, such as Cordes-sur-Ciel, Castres and the Aveyron gorges.

Finally, living in Albi guarantees excellent value for money on accommodation.

So, from Toulouse city centre to the surrounding towns (Albi, Moissac), not forgetting Saint-Cyprien, Saint-Etienne and Jean d’Arc, there’s a wide choice of accommodation to suit both your lifestyle and your budget.
